Police in Netrokona have detained a leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) over allegations that she took money from people by promising to arrange government Family Cards for them.
Syeda Sadia Islam, organizational secretary of the NCP’s Netrokona district committee, was detained Tuesday evening in the Kurpar area of Netrokona town.
According to police and local residents, several people caught Sadia while she was allegedly taking money from a woman and later handed her over to police.
Sadia is a resident of Tetulia village in Madanpur Union under Netrokona Sadar upazila.
Local people alleged that Sadia and others were collecting Tk1,500 from individuals by promising to help them obtain Family Cards.
Police said there were allegations that money had been collected from people in several areas on the same promise. However, it was not immediately confirmed who else may have been involved.
NCP Says It Is Looking Into Allegation
Fahim Rahman Khan Pathan, member secretary of the NCP’s Netrokona district committee, confirmed that Sadia serves as the committee’s organizational secretary.
He said the party was looking into the allegations and would take organizational action if she was found to have engaged in activities contrary to party rules.
No Case Filed Yet
Additional Superintendent of Police Sajal Sarkar of Netrokona Sadar Circle confirmed Sadia’s detention.
He said police were investigating the matter and would take legal action if a written complaint was filed.
As of Tuesday night, no case had been filed over the incident.
