SAVAR — Police in Bangladesh have recovered the decomposed bodies of a man, a woman and a newborn from a locked rented room in Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka, with investigators suspecting that the three may have been deliberately killed.
The bodies were recovered early Saturday from a room in a four-storey residential building owned by Haji Hazrat Ali in Madhya Jamgora, police said.
Neighbours told police that the couple had rented the room on Aug. 9, presenting themselves as husband and wife. The doors and windows were usually kept closed, and residents became suspicious after noticing a strong foul smell coming from the room.
Police broke open the lock after being alerted by residents and found the bodies inside. A forensic team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) subsequently visited the scene and collected evidence.
Ashulia police chief Tariqul Islam said investigators were working to establish the identities of the victims and determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The bodies were sent for autopsies to determine the causes of death.
Police said preliminary examination of the scene suggested the possibility of a planned killing. A cloth known locally as a gamcha was reportedly found wrapped around the man’s neck.
Similar case in Ashulia
The latest incident comes amid a series of serious killings reported in and around Ashulia in recent months.
In August 2026, the body of a five-year-old boy, Abdur Rahman, was found inside a sack on the rooftop of a four-storey building in Ashulia, about three hours after he went missing. Police arrested a tenant of the building and said the circumstances pointed to a planned killing. Investigators later said rice and remnants of red adhesive tape found in the suspect’s room helped lead them to the accused, who allegedly confessed to the killing during the investigation.
In another case in September 2025, police recovered the bodies of a couple and their five-year-old daughter from a locked room in a rented tin-shed house in Ashulia. The man’s body was found hanging, while his wife and daughter were found on a bed. Police said the woman had signs of strangulation and suspected that the husband had killed his wife and daughter before taking his own life.
Ashulia has also been the focus of a major criminal investigation into the deaths of seven young people during the violence of August 2024. In February 2026, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced six people to death and seven others to life imprisonment in connection with that case.
Police have not indicated any connection between those earlier cases and Saturday’s discovery.
The investigation into the deaths of the couple and the newborn is continuing, and authorities are awaiting forensic and autopsy findings before drawing conclusions about how they died.
