A writ petition has been filed challenging the legality of a government notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations.
Deputy Attorney General Noor Mohammad Azmi, who is responsible for the relevant court, confirmed the filing on Monday (September 7).
The petition seeks a rule asking why the notification issued on May 12, 2025 should not be declared to have been issued without lawful authority. It also seeks a stay on the operation of the notification while the rule remains pending before the court.
The writ petition was listed at serial No. 60 on Monday’s cause list of a High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan.
The Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued the notification on May 12, 2025.
According to the notification, all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations were prohibited until the completion of proceedings before the International Crimes Tribunal against their leaders and activists.
The ban covers publications, campaigning through the media, online platforms and social media, as well as rallies, meetings, gatherings, conferences and other activities.
The writ petition challenging the legality of the notification was filed by Md Al Amin, a resident of Sreenagar in Munshiganj.
