An Air India flight bound for Abu Dhabi was forced to make an emergency landing in India on Monday after the oil level in one of its engines dropped dangerously low mid-flight, according to Indian media reports.
The Boeing 737-series aircraft, operating as Air India flight AI-9415, departed from Cochin International Airport in Kerala’s Kochi for Abu Dhabi in the morning.
About 50 minutes after takeoff, one of the pilots noticed that the oil level in the aircraft’s first engine had fallen to a critically low level. After a quick discussion, the pilots decided to turn the aircraft around and return to Kochi.
An Air India source told Indian news agency ANI that the aircraft could not have continued its journey to Abu Dhabi in that condition. The oil pressure reportedly fell so low during the return flight that the pilots were forced to shut down the first engine as a precaution to prevent a potential accident.
The incident caused panic among passengers on board. However, Air India said that all passengers were safe and that there were no injuries.
The airline has not yet disclosed what caused the engine oil level to fall to such a critical level. It also has not released details about the number of passengers and crew members on board.
The incident comes more than a year after a fatal Air India crash in Ahmedabad. On June 12, 2025, an Air India aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad for London, killing 241 people aboard the aircraft as well as 19 people on the ground.
