NATORE — A 60-year-old homeopathic doctor was hacked to death by unidentified assailants outside his clinic in Bangladesh’s northern Natore district, police and local officials said.
Anarul Islam was attacked at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday near his clinic at Chandpur Bazar in Natore Sadar upazila, according to police. His attackers left his body on a nearby paved road before fleeing the scene.
Local residents found Anarul lying in a pool of blood and took him to Natore Modern Sadar Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Dr. Moinul Haque, a physician at the hospital, said the victim had multiple injuries caused by a sharp weapon on his head, chest, back and other parts of his body.
Although people who brought him to the hospital initially suspected that he had been killed in a road accident, a medical examination found multiple wounds consistent with an attack involving a sharp weapon. Excessive blood loss was believed to have caused his death, Haque said.
Anarul was a resident of Dasmaria village in Kafuria Union of neighboring Rajshahi district’s Puthia upazila. He operated a homeopathic clinic at Chandpur Bazar, near the Natore-Puthia border, where he treated local residents.
The chairman of Kafuria Union Parishad said he had heard that Anarul was killed and that his body was later dumped on the road. He said he was unaware of any dispute involving the doctor.
Natore Sadar police chief Monsur Rahman said officers had visited the scene and launched an investigation to identify those responsible.
A case was expected to be filed by the victim’s family, police said.
