Journalist Farzana Rupa has been transferred to the prison cell at Bangladesh Medical University after developing health complications in custody (Representational Photo).

Journalist Farzana Rupa has fallen ill and been admitted to Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), where she is currently receiving treatment.

The matter was confirmed by Munshiganj District Jail Superintendent Md. Jannat-ul Farhad. He said Rupa developed health complications on Sunday evening and was subsequently taken to BMU, where she remains under medical care.

Rupa and journalist Shakil Ahmed were arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 21, 2024. The following day, on August 22, a court granted police four days’ remand for questioning in a murder case filed over the death of Fazlul Karim at Uttara East Police Station.

They were subsequently shown arrested in several other cases related to the July movement and were sent to remand multiple times in connection with those cases.

Rupa remains under treatment at BMU.
