The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into former adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and three other officials over allegations of irregularities and corruption in recruitment, transfers and procurement at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
A senior ACC official confirmed the development to Dhaka Post on Wednesday, September 2, saying that a four-member investigation team has already been formed to look into the allegations.
ACC Deputy Director Md Zahid Kalam is leading the investigation team.
The other individuals named in the allegations are former Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Md Mahbub-ul-Alam, Joint Secretary Dr Sheikh Mohammad Zubayed Hossain, and Deputy Secretary Md Masum Ahmed.
According to ACC sources, allegations against Asif Mahmud, a former adviser to the interim government formed after the July mass uprising and spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP), include corruption involving large sums of money.
The allegations reportedly include taking bribes to facilitate illegal activities, money laundering, and transferring money abroad. He has also allegedly been accused of illegal Bitcoin transactions, extortion, nepotism and using regional influence, according to complaints submitted to the ACC.
Sources further said allegations have been raised that Asif Mahmud directly interfered in the formation of the Bangladesh Cricket Board while serving as the adviser in charge of the Youth and Sports Ministry.
There are also allegations that he obtained various unlawful benefits through his former Assistant Private Secretary (APS), Moazzem Hossain.
The ACC’s investigation will determine the validity of the allegations and whether there is sufficient evidence to establish any wrongdoing.
