Women Leader Found Dead With Throat Slashed in Bangladesh

- October 23, 2026, 01:27 PM ET

Police recovered the body of a leader of Bangladesh Awami League’s women unit from her apartment in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on Friday, October 23, with multiple injuries apparently caused by a sharp weapon.

The victim, Dalia Akter Suma, 50, was president of the organisation’s Basta Union unit and a teacher at Char Baghapur Government Primary School.

Her body was discovered in the bedroom of her third-floor apartment in the Sonali Bank building at Rasulpur Bazar under South Keraniganj Police Station.

Police said she had suffered injuries to her throat, face and ear, raising suspicions that she had been murdered.

Police Called to Apartment

Investigators recovered Suma’s body around 9 a.m. after receiving information through the national emergency helpline, 999.

Inspector Mohammad Azgar Hossain of South Keraniganj Police Station said police found several wounds apparently inflicted with a sharp weapon.

The body was subsequently sent to the morgue of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in Dhaka for a postmortem examination.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Department’s crime scene unit examined the apartment as part of the investigation.

Police have not established who was responsible for her death or what may have motivated the attack.

Victim Had Been Living Alone

According to local residents, Suma had previously lived in the apartment with her two daughters following her divorce from her husband, Mohammad Ali.

After both daughters married and moved away, she continued living in the flat alone.

Suma was associated with the Basta Union branch of Jubo Mohila League, the women’s youth affiliate of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned.

She also worked at Char Baghapur Government Primary School. Reports differ on whether she held a permanent assistant teaching position or worked there part-time.

Police said the investigation was continuing, with forensic examination and postmortem findings expected to help establish the circumstances of her death.

No arrests or identified suspects had been announced in the initial reports.
