Body Found in Bangladesh River With Hands Tied, Bricks Attached to Neck

- October 24, 2026, 01:43 AM ET

Police recovered the partially decomposed body of an unidentified man from a river in Bangladesh’s southern Patuakhali district on Friday, October 23, with his hands tied and bricks attached to his neck, raising suspicions of murder.

The body was discovered in the Algi River near Banglabazar Jame Mosque in Bauphal municipality and recovered by naval police around 4:45 p.m.

Police suspect the man may have been killed four to five days earlier and his body dumped in the river. However, investigators have yet to establish his identity or determine the cause of death.

Residents Spot Body Floating in River

Local residents noticed the body floating near the mosque’s river landing around 2 p.m. Friday and informed Bauphal Police Station.

Officers from the Kalaiya Naval Police Outpost subsequently arrived and recovered the remains.

Sub-Inspector Md Sarwar Hossain of the outpost confirmed that the deceased was a man whose body had undergone significant decomposition.

Both hands were tied, and bricks had been secured near his neck.

The condition of the remains made identification through facial recognition impossible, the officer said.

Some local accounts estimated the man’s age at approximately 30 to 32, although police have not confirmed his age.

Police Suspect Body Was Dumped After Killing

Sarwar Hossain said the condition of the body suggested the man might have been killed four or five days before its discovery.

Investigators suspect the bricks may have been attached to weigh down the body after it was dumped in the water.

Police have not confirmed where the man died, how his body entered the river or whether the incident involved murder.

The remains were sent to the morgue at Patuakhali Medical College Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Police also circulated information about the recovered body to other police stations and naval police outposts in an effort to establish the man’s identity.

Bauphal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam confirmed the recovery.

Investigators are awaiting the postmortem findings while continuing efforts to identify the deceased and establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
