Missing Man Found Dead in Bangladesh's Brahmaputra River

- October 23, 2026, 09:00 PM ET

A 55-year-old man who disappeared after leaving home in search of work was found dead in the Brahmaputra River in Bangladesh’s northern Jamalpur district on Friday, October 23, three days after he went missing.

The victim, Habibur Rahman, was identified as the son of Zahir Uddin of Baruamari village in Lakshmirchar Union under Jamalpur Sadar upazila.

Police recovered his partially decomposed body from the river near Nama Kochandhara village in Narundi Union at approximately 2 p.m.

According to police, Rahman left home three days earlier to look for work but never returned. His family searched several locations without finding any trace of him.

Despite his disappearance, relatives did not file a general diary, or GD, with the police.

At around 11 a.m. Friday, local residents crossing the Brahmaputra by boat spotted a body floating in the water near Kochandhara.

They alerted police, who arrived at the scene and recovered the remains approximately three hours later.

Inspector Obaidul Haque of the Narundi Police Investigation Centre confirmed the recovery and said the body was taken to the police station before arrangements were made for a postmortem examination.

Haque said the cause of death could not be determined until the autopsy findings were available.

Police have not established how Rahman ended up in the river or whether his death involved foul play.
