Woman Found Dead Inside Plastic Drum in Bangladesh

- October 23, 2026, 12:18 AM ET

Police in Bangladesh have identified a woman whose body was found inside a plastic drum in a canal beneath a bridge in Sherpur district, with multiple sharp-weapon injuries suggesting she was murdered.

The victim, Jhinuk Akter, 28, was identified through biometric technology by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) after her body was recovered on Thursday, October 22, from the Kutemoni Canal in Sreebardi upazila.

Police found injuries on her head, forehead and face, along with a piece of cloth wrapped around her neck. Investigators suspect she was killed before her body was concealed in the drum and dumped into the canal.

Body Discovered Beneath Bridge

Local residents spotted a blue plastic drum floating beneath a bridge near Kurikahania Bazar around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

The drum’s opening was uncovered, allowing passersby to see what appeared to be a human body inside. They alerted police, who arrived and recovered the woman’s remains.

Sreebardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nurul Alam said the body bore several injuries apparently caused by a sharp weapon.

Police suspect the drum may have been thrown into the canal from the bridge, although they have not established where or when the woman was killed.

The body was sent to Sherpur District Sadar Hospital for a postmortem examination.

PBI Identifies Victim, Searches for Family

PBI investigators used a biometric identification device to establish the woman’s identity.

Jhinuk was identified as the daughter of Shakil Mia and Baby, with a recorded address in the Ershad Nagar area of Tongi East Police Station in Gazipur district.

However, investigators found that Jhinuk and her family had not lived at the address for a considerable period. Police have been unable to locate her relatives.

PBI Superintendent of Police Pankaj Dutta, who oversees Sherpur and Jamalpur districts, said preliminary findings suggested murder.

He confirmed that investigators had obtained an address linked to the victim but could not find her family there.

Dutta said efforts were underway to trace her relatives and identify those responsible for her death.

Police have not established a motive, identified suspects or announced any arrests. The postmortem findings are expected to help determine the cause of death.
