Man Shot Dead in Suspected Gang Rivalry in Bangladesh's Khulna

- October 23, 2026, 02:29 PM ET

A man was shot dead in Bangladesh’s southwestern city of Khulna early Thursday, October 22, in what police suspect was a clash between rival criminal groups.

The victim, identified as Tahedul Islam Tushar, was shot in the back around 5:30 a.m. near Ansar Uddin Lane in the city’s Purba Baniakhamar area. His body was found on the road beside a black Yamaha R15 motorcycle without a registration plate.

Police recovered two spent bullet casings from a nearby location and launched an operation to arrest the suspected attackers.

Tushar was the son of Abdur Razzak of Jinnapara in Khulna’s Labanchora area.

Shooting Followed Early-Morning Confrontation

According to police and local residents, a confrontation broke out among several men near Khademul Ulum Madrasa in the Lohar Gate area of Purba Baniakhamar shortly before the shooting.

The confrontation reportedly involved a scuffle and an alleged stabbing.

Tushar subsequently left the area on his motorcycle. As he reached the eastern end of Ansar Uddin Lane, gunmen opened fire, striking him in the back.

He fell onto the road with his motorcycle and died at the scene.

Sub-Inspector Md Shah Alam of Khulna Sadar Police Station confirmed that police recovered the body, the motorcycle and two bullet casings.

The body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Police Suspect Rival Gang Involvement

Khulna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Lokman Hossain said Tushar was associated with a criminal group led by Palash, an alleged gang leader and drug trafficker who is currently imprisoned.

Police suspect the killing resulted from a dispute involving rival groups led by individuals identified as Sujan and Jitu.

According to the officer, Tushar had entered an area controlled by the rival groups before the confrontation.

Police said he faced two criminal cases involving firearms and extortion allegations.

He had appeared before a court on June 7 in connection with an arms-related case and was subsequently released on bail.

Investigators have identified suspected attackers and launched operations to arrest them, the officer said.

However, the precise sequence of events leading to the shooting and the motive have not been conclusively established.

No arrests had been confirmed in the initial reports.
