KYIV — At least two people were killed in a fresh wave of Russian attacks targeting civilian transport infrastructure across Ukraine on Wednesday, damaging railway networks, a petrol station and maritime transport, Ukrainian officials said.
A 42-year-old man injured in a strike on a petrol station in Kyiv and the surrounding region later died in hospital, according to the report. A railway worker was also injured by shrapnel while returning home after work.
Ukrainian Railways chief Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said the rail network in Kyiv had come under fire and urged passengers using the central railway station to exercise maximum caution.
The attacks also extended to Ukraine’s maritime routes in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Oleg Kiper, governor of the Odesa region, said a Ukrainian captain was killed when Russian forces struck an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged cargo vessel near the port of Odesa.
The Turkish Chamber of Shipping said at least 226 civilian and commercial vessels had been attacked since the war began in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of seeking to cripple the economy and destroy people’s lives by targeting transport and other infrastructure.
Russia’s Defence Ministry, however, said its strikes in the Kyiv region targeted drone manufacturing warehouses and factories operated by Ukraine’s armed forces. It also claimed that military equipment-carrying vessels and production facilities linked to military supplies were targeted in the Odesa region.
