SINGAPORE — Passengers in Singapore could face fines of up to S$500 for playing audio or music at high volume on public buses or placing their feet on seats under new public transport regulations.
The same level of penalty may apply to passengers who eat or drink on buses or litter, according to rules announced by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Monday.
The LTA said more serious offences, including obstructing or endangering other passengers at bus interchanges or causing significant cleanliness problems at buses and interchanges, could result in fines of up to S$5,000.
The authority said the new measures are intended to create a safer, more considerate and pleasant public transport environment for everyone.
Previously, bus drivers could ask passengers who breached the rules to leave the vehicle. Under the new system, authorised bus staff, including ticket inspectors, will be able to issue fines and notices directly.
Bus drivers will not be given enforcement powers, allowing them to remain focused on operating their vehicles safely. However, if a passenger refuses to stop disruptive behaviour, the driver can ask them to leave the bus or seek police assistance.
The LTA emphasised that public transport is a shared social space and said every passenger has a role to play in maintaining a courteous and pleasant commuting environment.
