India on Tuesday reiterated its desire to develop a positive, constructive and forward-looking relationship with Bangladesh, while expressing readiness to discuss all bilateral issues through existing diplomatic mechanisms.
Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks during a media briefing in New Delhi while responding to questions about the trajectory of India-Bangladesh relations.
“India desires a positive, constructive and forward-looking relationship with Bangladesh,” Jaiswal said.
He added that New Delhi was prepared to address bilateral matters through the structured mechanisms already in place between the two countries.
“Our intent is to take this relationship forward in a positive direction, in a constructive direction, in a forward-looking manner,” Jaiswal said.
The statement comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between Dhaka and New Delhi, including Bangladesh’s appointment of Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam as its next High Commissioner to India, following New Delhi’s approval of his appointment.
Jaiswal was also asked about the possibility of a meeting between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who is currently in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The spokesperson said he had no information about such a meeting at present, adding that he would provide updates if there were developments.
The latest remarks underscore New Delhi’s stated preference for addressing outstanding bilateral matters through established diplomatic channels while seeking to move relations with Dhaka in a constructive and forward-looking direction.
