WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has extended existing US sanctions on Iran for another five years, keeping the measures in place through 2031, according to the White House.
Trump also signed legislation authorizing expanded sanctions, tariffs and other restrictions on Russia, the White House said in a statement on Friday.
The legislation, titled the “Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026,” extends the existing sanctions regime against Iran, which had been due to expire in 2026.
The law also provides for the authorization and expansion of legal sanctions, tariffs and other restrictions targeting Russia.
Tehran has strongly criticized the new US measures, describing Washington’s sanctions policy as “economic terrorism.”
The legislation is named after the late US Senator Lindsey O. Graham, who was a prominent supporter of US and Israeli military action against Iran and a vocal advocate of Israel’s campaign in Gaza.
The latest move comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the two countries facing a broader confrontation over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.
