DHAKA — Bangladesh’s Awami League has expressed solidarity with a “lockdown” programme announced by its youth wing, the Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, in Dhaka, calling for the withdrawal of what it described as “false and harassing” cases and the establishment of good governance.
In a statement, the Awami League alleged that the current government was continuing what it called a politically motivated judicial process through an “illegal and unconstitutional tribunal.” The party also accused the authorities of using the judiciary to issue a series of verdicts that it described as unlawful and politically motivated.
The Awami League said the Jubo League had announced the Dhaka-wide lockdown for Sunday to protest what it called a “retaliatory” verdict recently delivered by the tribunal and to demand the withdrawal of cases against its leaders and activists.
The party said it fully endorsed the Jubo League’s programme and called on leaders and activists at all levels, including those belonging to its affiliated and allied organisations, to make the programme “successful and meaningful.”
The statement used strongly worded criticism of the government, referring to it as part of what the party called the “continuation” of the government led by Muhammad Yunus.
The Awami League concluded the statement with its traditional slogans, “Joy Bangla” and “Joy Bangabandhu,” and a declaration of commitment to Bangladesh.
