RANGPUR – Drug tests conducted on Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, who were arrested in connection with the killing of four members of a family in Rangpur, found no traces of drugs in their bodies, police said on Monday.
Sanatan Chakraborty, deputy commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, confirmed the development to Kalbela.
He said samples from the two suspects were collected at Rangpur Central Jail on Sunday for security reasons. The samples were subsequently tested, and no traces of amphetamine were found.
A DB team visited the jail at around 1:15pm on Sunday to collect the samples. A technologist and an assistant from Rangpur Medical College accompanied the police team.
Police had requested the principal of Rangpur Medical College to arrange for the samples to be collected inside the jail for the suspects’ security. After receiving approval, the medical college sent a technologist to assist the police.
The bodies of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife and their two children were recovered from their home in Machuapara in Rangpur city on August 22.
Police later arrested their neighbours, Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, in connection with the killings. The two suspects subsequently gave confessional statements before a court under Section 164 of Bangladesh’s Code of Criminal Procedure.
Ganapati Chakraborty’s elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station in Rangpur against unidentified persons.
