Washington – A US military aircraft has landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport amid heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow over the war in Ukraine, triggering speculation about the purpose of the unusual flight.
According to flight-tracking data and other sources, the aircraft is believed to be a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, a long-range military transport aircraft operated by the US Air Force.
The aircraft, reportedly operating under the callsign RCH4555 and registration number 07-7181, took off from Riga, Latvia, at around 8:50am on Tuesday and landed in Moscow shortly after 10am. No immediate official explanation was given for the flight.
Neither the United States nor Russia has publicly commented on the aircraft’s mission. The Kremlin also told Reuters that it had no information about the flight or who or what was aboard.
Why did the US military aircraft land in Moscow?
Flight records show that the aircraft arrived in Riga on August 23 after previously flying from Camp Springs in the United States. The area is associated with Joint Base Andrews, the main US base for presidential and senior government air transport.
However, the aircraft’s presence in Moscow does not necessarily mean that a senior US official was on board. Military transport aircraft are frequently used to move personnel, vehicles, communications equipment and other logistical supplies ahead of high-level visits.
The unusual flight comes amid renewed speculation over possible US-Russia diplomatic engagement on the Ukraine war. There have been reports in recent weeks that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth could travel to Moscow as Washington seeks to revive stalled discussions aimed at ending the conflict.
The speculation intensified after reports that US and European officials had been working on a new proposal for Moscow.
Another possibility raised by the War & Military News platform is that the aircraft’s arrival could be linked to an expected visit to Moscow by US special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff for discussions on the Ukraine conflict.
The last known direct US flight to Russia reportedly took place in January, when Kushner and Witkoff travelled to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Those discussions failed to produce an agreement, with Putin reportedly demanding that Ukraine withdraw its forces from the eastern Donbas region as part of a potential settlement.
For now, the precise purpose of the C-17’s Moscow landing remains unclear, leaving the unusual flight at the centre of renewed speculation about possible behind-the-scenes diplomatic activity between Washington and Moscow.
