India has successfully conducted a test of its Agni-4 ballistic missile, a nuclear-capable missile with a range of nearly 4,000 kilometers, further strengthening the country’s land-based nuclear deterrence capability.
The test was conducted on Thursday, August 6, from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, according to a report by Defense Security Asia.
Rather than demonstrating a new missile capability, the test was aimed at validating the performance and operational readiness of the Agni-4, which is already in service with the Indian armed forces. Such tests are designed to assess the missile’s reliability, troop preparedness, logistics and ability to be deployed at short notice.
The test was conducted by India’s Strategic Forces Command under the framework of the country’s Nuclear Command Authority, with technical and logistical support from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
A key aspect of the test was the selection of a randomly chosen Agni-4 missile from an operational production lot. This allowed the Indian military to evaluate not only the missile itself but also the readiness of maintenance systems, transportation arrangements and launch teams under operational conditions.
India’s Ministry of Defence said all operational and technical parameters of the missile were successfully validated. The two-stage, solid-fuel-powered missile completed its launch, flight, guidance, stage separation and atmospheric re-entry sequences as planned.
Strategic Significance
India classifies the Agni-4 as a medium-range ballistic missile. However, with a range of up to 4,000 kilometers, it also falls within the intermediate-range category under commonly used international classifications.
From potential deployment areas in eastern and northeastern India, the Agni-4 can cover large parts of mainland China as well as the entirety of Pakistan. Alongside the longer-range Agni-5, the missile therefore provides India with another option for maintaining a retaliatory nuclear strike capability.
The Agni-4 occupies an important position between shorter-range systems such as the Agni-2 and Agni-3 and India’s longer-range missile platforms. Its road-mobile design also enhances its survivability by allowing it to be relocated and deployed from different positions.
Earlier Aviation Warning
India had recently issued an aviation warning covering an area extending more than 2,500 kilometers across the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. The warning was later expanded to cover nearly 3,760 kilometers.
The unusually large warning zone led military experts to speculate that India could be preparing for a long-range missile test. The subsequent confirmation of the Agni-4 launch has now reinforced those expectations.
The latest test underscores India’s continued efforts to maintain the reliability and operational readiness of its strategic missile forces amid growing military competition in the region.
