A 55-year-old Hindu woman was found dead with bloody injuries at her home in Khulna’s Batiaghata Upazila on Friday night, with the circumstances surrounding her death still unclear.
The victim was identified as Suchitra Barkan Das.
According to accounts from neighbors, Suchitra’s husband, Sukhdeb Barkan Das, returned home and found his wife bloodied and dead. His screams alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the house and informed Batiaghata police.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, behind Government Chakrakhali Primary School in Jalma Union.
Police have yet to determine who killed Suchitra or establish a motive for the killing of the woman from the minority Hindu community.
Some local residents have raised suspicions about her 25-year-old son, Mrityunjay Barkan Das. Police, however, have not established his involvement in his mother’s death.
Police and local sources said Mrityunjay has struggled with drug addiction for a long time. There are allegations that he frequently assaulted his mother over money for drugs and disputes related to his drug use.
Mrityunjay has not been found since the incident, and police are searching for him as part of their investigation.
Police went to the scene after receiving information about the death and conducted a preliminary examination of the body. They have also begun investigating the suspected killing.
Investigators have yet to establish the precise cause of Suchitra’s death or determine how she sustained her fatal injuries.
Police said the circumstances surrounding her death would become clearer after a detailed investigation and an autopsy report.
The killing has caused widespread concern in the area as police continue efforts to determine what happened and identify those responsible.
