- October 03, 2026, 04:45 PM ET

A 40-year-old man was beaten to death with sticks in a char area along the eastern bank of the Jamuna River in Sirajganj on Saturday, police and local sources said.

The attack took place around 3:30 p.m. at Rupsa Bazar in Mechhra Union of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila.

The victim was identified as Aminur Islam, son of Sohrab Hossain of Rupsa village.

Police and local sources said Aminur had been locked in a dispute with a local group for a long time. Local arbitration meetings had been held multiple times in the past in an attempt to settle the dispute.

The underlying cause of the dispute was not immediately disclosed.

The conflict resurfaced Saturday afternoon when Aminur became involved in an argument and confrontation with members of the rival group at Rupsa Bazar.

At one point, members of the group allegedly attacked Aminur with sticks and beat him severely.

The assault left Aminur critically injured and broke one of his legs.

His relatives tried to rush him to a hospital, but he died before reaching the facility.

Sirajganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rakibul Hasan confirmed the killing.

He said Aminur had a previous dispute with a local group and that attempts had earlier been made to resolve the conflict through local arbitration.

Police went to the scene after receiving information about the attack and took custody of Aminur’s body.

No one had been arrested in connection with the killing as of Saturday evening.

Rakibul said police would take further legal action after the victim’s relatives came to the police station and filed a complaint.

The identities of the alleged attackers had not been disclosed.
