A dispute over a goat eating bitter gourd plants turned deadly in Naogaon, where a farmer was allegedly stabbed to death and four others were injured in a clash between two families.
Police arrested seven members of the same family in connection with the killing and recovered a knife allegedly used in the attack.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Friday in Barashibpur, also known as Masterpara, in Dhamoirhat Upazila.
The victim, Abul Kashem, 42, was the son of the late Raj Mahmud Mondal of the village.
Police said the dispute began after a goat ate bitter gourd plants from a field belonging to Rakibul Islam Rony, 28, a resident of the same village.
An argument broke out between Kashem and Rony’s family over the damaged plants. The confrontation later escalated into a physical clash.
During the fight, Rony allegedly attacked Kashem repeatedly with a sharp knife, police said.
Five people, including Kashem, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Joypurhat Sadar Hospital. Kashem later died at the hospital.
The other injured people were identified as Kashem’s elder brother Muktar Ali, Muktar’s wife Rekha Begum, another elder brother, Badiul Islam, and his younger brother Imran Ali.
Kashem’s wife was also reported to be in serious condition and receiving treatment at Bogura Medical College Hospital, while other injured people remained at Joypurhat Sadar Hospital.
Kashem’s son, Abu Sayeed Hossain, later filed a murder case with Dhamoirhat Police Station.
Police launched raids in different areas of neighboring Joypurhat district Friday night and arrested seven people named in the case.
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam confirmed the arrests around 2 p.m. Saturday.
Those arrested were Rony; his father, Abdul Hakim, 60; Rony’s uncle Md. Kofil Uddin, 65; Aklima Begum, 35; Hamida Begum, 38; Farida Begum, 50; and Rony’s wife, Jiasmin Begum, 21.
Police said all seven suspects belong to the same family.
Tarikul said police went to the scene immediately after receiving information about the clash. Officers arrested the seven suspects within hours of the murder case being filed.
Police also recovered a knife they believe was used in the killing.
The suspects were later sent to jail through a court following legal procedures.
