Iran has presented the United States with a new roadmap aimed at ending the ongoing war, including a 60-day ceasefire and the lifting of blockades around the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian ports, according to multiple sources cited by AFP.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Iranian and US representatives in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Officials from Qatar, Pakistan and Egypt took part as mediators in the talks.
Under the proposed roadmap, the ceasefire would remain in effect for 60 days. Once it takes effect, Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the US blockade of Iranian ports would both be lifted. During the ceasefire, Tehran and Washington would also refrain from carrying out attacks against each other.
The Iranian proposal also calls for an end to attacks on neighbouring Arab countries as part of a broader regional de-escalation.
It remains unclear whether Washington has accepted the proposal. US President Donald Trump has said the United States will not lift its blockade on Iranian ports until Tehran takes steps demonstrating sufficient willingness to end the conflict.
According to one source familiar with the proposal, the roadmap is intended as a detailed framework for meaningful negotiations aimed at ending the conflict and resolving outstanding differences between Tehran and Washington.
The source said the document reorganises and summarises the outcomes of previous rounds of negotiations while identifying several key issues requiring urgent action.
Tuesday’s discussions began with a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
A second meeting involving diplomats and experts from both sides followed the initial session.
Witkoff later said on X that he had held lengthy discussions with the Iranian delegation through mediators who had been shuttling between the two sides throughout the day.
“We successfully completed a round of discussions, which we hope will be productive and promising,” Witkoff said, adding that the mediators would continue their efforts.
The latest diplomatic initiative comes as tensions between Iran and the United States remain high, with the Strait of Hormuz and sanctions on Iranian ports emerging as key issues in efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict.
