DHAKA – A flash procession allegedly organised by the Awami League was held in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on Saturday to mark the 80th birthday of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Several cocktails were reportedly exploded during the procession, and police detained four people in connection with the incident.
The procession took place around noon in front of a Bata showroom on Dhanmondi Road 27. Participants reportedly marched under the banner of the Mohammadpur thana unit of the Awami League before dispersing from the area.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Imdadul Islam confirmed the incident.He said the Awami League activists held a flash procession and exploded cocktails during the event. Three people were detained while attempting to flee after the procession, while police also recovered a banner from the scene.
Meanwhile, Mohammadpur Police Station OC Abdul Halim said another person was detained while fleeing after the procession and cocktail explosions in the Dhanmondi area.
According to police and local sources, the procession began on Sat Masjid Road and proceeded through the area near Ibn Sina Hospital before ending in front of the Bata showroom on Road 27.
Several cocktails were reportedly exploded during the procession, prompting the participants to disperse from the area.
Police said four people have been detained in connection with the incident and that legal proceedings are underway.
The incident took place as supporters of Sheikh Hasina marked her 80th birthday with the flash procession in the capital.
