DHAKA — The United States has welcomed Bangladesh’s decision to purchase 11 additional Boeing aircraft, with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen congratulating Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Boeing on the planned agreement.
The supplementary agreement between Bangladesh’s national flag carrier and US aircraft manufacturer Boeing is scheduled to be signed in New York on Wednesday afternoon local time, according to officials.
Christensen said he was pleased to see Biman move forward with the purchase of 11 more commercial aircraft from Boeing, describing the deal as another “win-win” for Bangladesh-US relations.
The ambassador is also expected to attend the signing ceremony during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
Officials said the additional 11 aircraft will be purchased on top of a $3.7 billion agreement signed with Boeing on April 30 for 14 aircraft. With the latest addition, Biman’s planned Boeing purchases will rise to 25 aircraft.
Details of the models, prices, financing arrangements and delivery schedules for the additional 11 aircraft have not yet been disclosed.
Separately, Biman Bangladesh Airlines is also considering a proposal to purchase 10 Airbus aircraft.
The latest Boeing agreement comes as Bangladesh seeks to expand and modernise its national carrier’s fleet and strengthen its international air connectivity.
