Ladakh’s snow leopard-tracking experience has been ranked the fourth-best wildlife experience in the world, according to the Wildlife Experience Index published by luxury travel company Bailey Robinson.
The experience scored 85.5 out of 100 in the index, which compares 30 wildlife encounters from destinations around the world.
Snow leopards inhabit the remote mountains of Ladakh and the wider Himalayan region. Their greyish-white coats and dark spots provide natural camouflage among snow and rocky terrain, making them notoriously difficult to spot. The animals are generally easier to encounter during winter, while the remoteness of their habitat means relatively little is still known about their lives in the wild.
Bailey Robinson assessed the wildlife experiences based on six factors: animal rarity, remoteness of the location, conservation importance, exclusivity of the experience, accessibility, and the likelihood of seeing the animals.
Sarah Parker, sales director at Bailey Robinson, told Condé Nast Traveller that the relationship between rarity and remoteness was a major attraction. She noted that exceptional wildlife encounters often require travellers to venture farther into remote wilderness areas visited by relatively few people.
The index placed mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda first, followed by emperor penguin expeditions in Antarctica and saiga antelope sightings in Kazakhstan. Ladakh’s snow leopard tracking ranked fourth, while Javan rhinoceros encounters in Java, Indonesia, took fifth place.
Several other wildlife experiences in the Indian subcontinent also featured in the ranking. Red panda tracking in Nepal, Bhutan or India scored 78.5 and ranked 15th, while one-horned rhinoceros safaris in India or Nepal scored 74.5, placing 21st.L
