The two pandas departed from Chengdu in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on Sunday, bound for the United States.
Feng Feng, a male born on March 17, 2020, is known for the large black markings around his eyes and his ability to climb trees. He frequently rests on tree branches.
Fu Shuang, a female born on October 18, 2020, has a distinctive tuft of hair on her head and a round face. She is also considered adept at foraging for food.
Both pandas come from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan.
China and Zoo Atlanta have a 25-year history of cooperation in panda conservation. The partnership began in 1999, when pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang were sent to the Atlanta zoo. Seven cubs were born during the previous period of cooperation.
To ensure a safe journey, the pandas have been provided with bamboo, young bamboo shoots, apples and necessary medicines. Veterinarians and caretakers are accompanying them during the flight.
After arriving in Atlanta, the pandas will undergo quarantine and health examinations before gradually adapting to their new surroundings under the supervision of Chinese experts.
The renewed cooperation is expected to support joint efforts to protect and conserve the giant panda, one of China’s best-known endangered species.
