Tourists from around the world regularly visit Nepal, a popular destination for trekking and adventure tourism. The recent flash floods have disrupted travel routes and triggered large-scale search and rescue operations in several areas.
According to figures provided by the respective governments and Nepalese authorities, the number of missing foreign nationals includes:
India: At least 320 Indian nationals are missing, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
China: Around 100 Chinese citizens remain unaccounted for, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
United States: The US State Department has reported 90 missing American citizens.
Ukraine: Nepal Police said 62 Ukrainian nationals have been missing since the floods.
Malaysia: Officials said 51 Malaysian citizens traveling with Fishtail Tours and Travels are missing.
Australia: Australian Assistant Immigration Minister said 41 Australian nationals remain unaccounted for.
United Kingdom: According to Nepal Police, 33 British citizens are still missing. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has separately reported that 15 British nationals are missing in Tibet, although it remains unclear how many of them may already be included in Nepal’s figures.
Canada: Canada’s Foreign Ministry said 30 Canadian citizens are missing.
Tourists From Several Other Countries Also Missing
In addition to the countries listed above, tourists from South Korea, South Africa, Portugal, the Netherlands and New Zealand are also reported to be among those missing.
Rescue teams have been working in flood-hit areas, clearing mud and debris and searching for people who may have been stranded or swept away by the sudden floods. Authorities are continuing to verify the numbers as rescue and identification efforts progress.
The figures may change as governments receive new information and authorities establish contact with tourists and their families.
