MUNSHIGANJ, August 19 – Former social welfare minister and parliamentarian Dr Dipu Moni has been granted 12-hour parole to attend matters related to the death and funeral of her husband, Barrister Taufiq Newaz.
Former Minister to Be Released From Munshiganj Jail From 6am to 6pm on Thursday
Dipu Moni will be released from Munshiganj District Jail from 6am to 6pm on Thursday, August 20, following an application submitted by her daughter, Tani Dipaboli Newaz.
Her lawyer, Advocate Gazi Faisal Islam, confirmed the development, saying the parole was granted after the application was submitted to Munshiganj Additional Deputy Commissioner Rezaul Karim.
Dipaboli had been seeking her mother’s release since Wednesday morning while her father’s body remained in Dhaka. According to the family, Newaz’s burial will take place after Dipu Moni is released on parole.
Earlier on Wednesday, Dipaboli visited her mother at the jail around noon. After leaving the prison, she went to the deputy commissioner’s office and submitted the parole application shortly before 2pm.
The family had initially sought four days of parole for Dipu Moni. She remains in custody at Munshiganj District Jail.
Husband Died Tuesday Night
Dipu Moni’s husband, Barrister Taufiq Newaz, died at a private hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday night, August 18, while undergoing treatment.
Prison authorities had earlier said that any parole application would be processed in accordance with the relevant rules.
The 12-hour release will allow Dipu Moni to attend the funeral and related family proceedings following her husband’s death.
