SAVAR, Bangladesh — Aug. 13, 2026: Bangladesh authorities have filed an anti-terrorism case against six alleged members of the banned militant group Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and six to seven unidentified people after explosives and materials allegedly used to manufacture improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered from a rented house in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.
Police have arrested Mohammad Arif, also known as Imran, 26, in connection with the case. Five other named suspects remain at large, according to police.
The case was filed late Wednesday by Md. Alomgir Hossain, a sub-inspector with the Counter Terrorism Investigation Division (CTID), at Savar Model Police Station. It was registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act as Case No. 55.
According to the case documents, the suspects allegedly held a secret meeting on Aug. 11 near an embankment beside the western boundary of the Tannery Estate in Savar, allegedly with plans to carry out acts of sabotage.
A CTID team subsequently raided the area and arrested Arif. Other suspects reportedly fled the scene.
Explosives and bomb-making materials seized
Based on information obtained from Arif, law enforcement officers raided a rented house in South Shyampur, where they recovered a range of materials allegedly intended for making IEDs.
The seized items included 98% concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid, potassium nitrate powder, detonators, remote-control devices, a voltmeter and bearing balls, among other materials.
Authorities also recovered 10 assembled pipe bombs or IEDs from the house. The Bomb Disposal Unit destroyed the devices at the scene as a precaution to protect public safety.
Police said the suspects had rented the property using false identities.
Police seek 10-day remand
Investigation officer SI Nur Mohammad said Arif remains in police custody and will be taken before a court on Thursday, when investigators are expected to seek a 10-day remand for further questioning.
Police said multiple CTID teams, along with personnel from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU), are conducting operations to locate and arrest the remaining suspects.
The six named accused are Mohammad Arif alias Imran, 26; Md. Nazmul Hasan Mamun, 32; Md. Akkas Ali, 30; Kamal Hossain Doctor, 45; Rakhi, 30; and Rakib, 30.
Separate case being prepared
Savar Model Police Station chief Saiful Alam said authorities are also preparing a separate case following the recovery of a pressure-cooker bomb in the Bongaon area on Aug. 12.
Police said six to seven unidentified people could be named in that case as the investigation continues.
