Kyiv, Aug. 5: Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, using ballistic missiles and drones, killing at least 14 people and injuring at least 22 others, Ukrainian authorities said on Wednesday. Officials described it as one of the deadliest attacks on the capital this year.
Kyiv Military Administration chief Tymur Tkachenko said the assault began shortly after midnight, prompting air raid alerts that lasted for more than an hour as multiple ballistic missiles struck Kyiv and surrounding areas.
According to local authorities, residential buildings and warehouses were damaged in the attacks. Tkachenko said nine people were killed in the Boryspil district, four in the Bucha district, and one in the Fastiv district.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescue workers were searching for people who may still be trapped beneath the rubble in central parts of the city. He added that four of the injured were in critical condition.
The Kyiv Military Administration accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure during the latest barrage.
Russia did not immediately comment on the reported strikes or the casualties.
The attack comes amid an escalation in cross-border strikes by both sides. In recent weeks, Russia has intensified missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, while Ukraine has increased strikes on Russian civilian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities.
On Tuesday, a Ukrainian drone attack on a Wildberries warehouse in Russia’s Moscow region reportedly killed five people and injured 10 others. A day earlier, Russian officials said a drone strike on a crowded beach in the southern Krasnodar region killed seven people and wounded 58.
Separately, Ukraine condemned the release of a video allegedly showing a drone pursuing a civilian in the southern Kherson region, describing it as evidence of a deliberate campaign targeting non-combatants. Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly denied intentionally attacking civilians throughout the war.
