Four prisoners from Dhaka Central Jail have died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital within two days, including three who died within less than two hours on Sunday morning.
The latest death was reported Monday after 67-year-old Ali Akbar Mondal was taken to the hospital after falling ill in prison. Doctors at the emergency department pronounced him dead.
It was not immediately known in which case Ali Akbar had been imprisoned. His home was in Babukhali of Mohammadpur upazila in Magura.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Ali Akbar’s body had been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
His death came a day after three other prisoners from the same jail died at the hospital within a span of one hour and 40 minutes.
Three Prisoners Died Sunday Morning
The three prisoners who died Sunday were Abul Bashar, 58, Abdul Qaiyum, 62, and Md Shahadat Hossain Liton, 52.
All three had been held at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj and were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after becoming ill.
Abul Bashar was brought to the hospital’s emergency department Sunday morning. Doctors pronounced him dead at 7:25 a.m.
Bashar was from Kutia Lakshmipur village in Kachua upazila of Chandpur. He was the son of Sekendar Ali and had been detained in a case filed with Kachua Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Abdul Qaiyum was also brought to the hospital from the jail Sunday morning. He was pronounced dead at 9:05 a.m., just one hour and 40 minutes after Bashar.
Qaiyum was from Golai Padabazar village in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla. His father was the late Dudu Mia. He had been detained in connection with eight cases.
Shahadat Hossain Liton, meanwhile, had been admitted to the hospital’s medicine department on Aug. 28 after falling ill. He died while undergoing treatment at around 8:45 a.m. Sunday.
Liton was from Pabla village under Daulatpur Police Station in Khulna. He was the son of the late Abdul Quader.
He had been imprisoned in connection with Rapid Trial Tribunal Case No. 11/07 and Uttara Police Station Case No. 9(11)06 under Sections 302, 34 and 201 of the Penal Code.
The four deaths in two days mean Dhaka Medical College Hospital has received a succession of seriously ill prisoners from Dhaka Central Jail over a short period. The available reports, however, did not specify the illnesses that led to their deaths or indicate any connection among the cases.
The bodies were kept at the hospital morgue for autopsies.
