Former Teacher, Wife and Two Children Found Dead in Rangpur Home

- August 23, 2026, 06:21 AM ET

RANGPUR,  August 23 – Four members of a family, including a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, were found dead at their home in Machuapara, Rangpur city, with police suspecting they were strangled several days ago.

The deceased were identified as Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their son Ayush Chakraborty, 14, and their daughter Agami Chakraborty, 25.

Police recovered the bodies from the family’s three-storey building in the Kamal Kachna-Machuapara area on Saturday night. Investigators said the bodies showed signs of strangulation, with ropes or cloth reportedly found around the victims’ necks.

The house was subsequently cordoned off by police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). CID officials said a strong decomposing smell was coming from inside the building, indicating that the deaths may have occurred three to four days earlier.

Rangpur CID officer-in-charge Sumit Chowdhury said the initial evidence suggested that the incident could have been linked to a robbery. The house’s electricity connection had been disconnected, while rooms appeared to have been ransacked and areas where money and valuables were usually kept had been broken into.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Detective) Sanatan Chakraborty also said investigators suspected the family had been murdered and that robbery could have been the motive. However, police have not yet confirmed the motive or identified any suspects.

According to investigators, the bodies of Pritilata and her daughter were found on the staircase leading to the roof. The body of the teenage son was reportedly found under a bed, while Ganapati Chakraborty’s body was discovered at one end of the rooftop.

Clothes, jewelry boxes and other belongings were found scattered across the house, adding to investigators’ suspicion of a possible robbery.

Local residents said Ganapati Chakraborty had only recently begun living on the second floor of the unfinished building with his family. The ground floor was reportedly vacant, and because the family had recently moved in, they had limited interaction with neighbors.

The incident came to light after Pritilata’s sister, Puja Chakraborty, visited the house on Saturday night after reportedly being unable to get a response from the family. When there was no response from inside, she alerted police. Fire and Civil Defence personnel later assisted police in entering the locked premises.

Police, CID investigators and a crime-scene team remained at the location late into the night to collect evidence and investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to determine the exact cause, motive and those responsible after forensic examination and further questioning.
