General Dhiraj Seth Assumes Charge as India’s 31st Army Chief

Leadership transition comes amid evolving global security challenges and military modernization efforts

New Delhi, July 1: General has officially taken over as the 31st Chief of the Indian Army, marking a significant leadership transition in one of the world’s largest military forces.

He assumed office on Tuesday, succeeding at a time when global security dynamics are rapidly shifting and the role of advanced technology in warfare continues to expand. As the new army chief, General Seth will command nearly 1.3 million personnel of the Indian Army.

Commissioned into the army in 1986, General Seth is an alumnus of the in Khadakwasla, Maharashtra. During his nearly four-decade-long military career, he commanded a specialized armored regiment in northern India’s desert sector, an armored brigade under the Western Command, and special forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Widely regarded in military circles as a forthright “tankman,” General Seth previously served as Deputy Chief of the strategic strike formation known as the Sudarshan Chakra Corps.

Alongside his appointment, India has also introduced several key changes in the top ranks of its armed forces. Lieutenant General has been appointed as the new Vice Chief of Army Staff, overseeing military planning, strategic operations, and force modernization.

Meanwhile, the has also undergone leadership changes from July 1, with Air Marshal taking over as Vice Chief of Air Staff, replacing Air Marshal .

Further reshuffles have also been made across regional army commands, reflecting India’s broader efforts to strengthen military preparedness and strategic capabilities.
