The Indian National Congress has officially announced V. D. Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala, ending days of speculation and internal deliberations over the leadership of the southern Indian state.
The decision came after a series of meetings involving senior Congress observers and party leaders amid reports of internal competition for the top post. Other prominent contenders included Congress MP K. C. Venugopal and veteran party leader Ramesh Chennithala.
According to party sources, Congress observers Mukul Wasnik and Ajay Maken held discussions with lawmakers and MPs before submitting their recommendations to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The party high command later finalized Satheesan’s appointment after consultations with senior Kerala leaders.
The Congress Legislature Party had earlier passed a resolution authorizing the party leadership to make the final decision regarding the chief ministerial post.
Who is VD Satheesan?
The 61-year-old Satheesan is regarded as one of Congress’s most influential organizers in Kerala politics. Born in Ernakulam district, he began his political journey through student activism at Sacred Heart College in Thevara and later held leadership positions in student organizations, including the National Students’ Union of India.
Although he lost his first assembly election in 1996, Satheesan has consistently won from the Paravur constituency since 2001. During the recent election campaign, he emphasized secular politics and positioned the United Democratic Front (UDF) as an alternative to both majority and minority communal politics.
His “Team UDF” campaign slogan was widely credited with energizing party workers and strengthening the alliance’s electoral campaign.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front secured a landslide victory in the Kerala Assembly elections, ending a decade of rule by the Left Democratic Front (LDF). In the 140-member assembly, the UDF won 102 seats, including 63 secured by Congress and 22 by its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League.
Outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan retained his constituency seat, but his LDF alliance was reduced to just 35 seats. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party expanded its presence in Kerala by winning three seats.
