Chennai, May 9, 2026 — Ending days of intense political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay formally staked claim to form the government on Saturday evening after securing the support of 120 legislators in the 234-member state assembly.

The chief of Thalapathy Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and submitted the required documents to prove majority support.

Vijay is scheduled to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, at 3:15 PM at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. The governor has officially invited him to form the government.

This was Vijay’s fourth meeting with the governor in the last four days amid fast-moving political developments in the state. His numbers were strengthened after unconditional support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League earlier on Saturday.

Several alliance leaders accompanied Vijay during his visit to Lok Bhavan, including senior representatives from the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Communist Party of India.

The dramatic rise of Vijay from cinema superstar to chief minister marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, a state historically known for the strong connection between film and politics.
