Washington, May 9, 2026 — US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, aimed at temporarily halting hostilities in the ongoing war between the two countries.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday, Trump said the ceasefire would remain in effect from Saturday through Monday, covering May 9, 10, and 11.
According to Trump, both Moscow and Kyiv agreed to suspend all military attacks during the period. He also stated that each side would release 1,000 prisoners of war, resulting in a total exchange of 2,000 detainees.
Trump said he had personally urged both governments to accept the temporary truce and thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for responding positively to the proposal.
“I am pleased to announce that Russia and Ukraine will observe a ceasefire for the next three days,” Trump wrote. He added that the timing coincides with Russia’s Victory Day commemorations marking the Soviet Union’s role in World War II, while also recognizing Ukraine’s historical contribution during the war.
The announcement comes amid continued international efforts to reduce tensions and seek a diplomatic pathway to end the conflict, which has caused widespread destruction and humanitarian crises since the war began.
