KOLKATA, April 28, 2026 — Voting for the second and final phase of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections will take place on Wednesday across 142 constituencies, covering key districts including Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, East and West Bardhaman, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, and Purulia.
The results of the election are scheduled to be announced on May 4.
The contest is primarily between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, with both sides expressing confidence in securing a majority.
Election authorities have reassigned 26 police officers who were on duty during the first phase to oversee operations in the second phase. Officials have been instructed to assume their responsibilities by Tuesday morning.
The Election Commission of India has also removed several administrative and police officials from their posts and appointed replacements, stating that those removed will not be involved in any election-related duties.
Meanwhile, an additional 1,468 voters have been included in the electoral rolls following tribunal decisions. According to the updated list published on Tuesday, the highest number of new voters were added in Kolkata South and Kolkata North constituencies.
One of the most closely watched contests in this phase is in Bhabanipur, where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Banerjee had previously lost to Adhikari in the Nandigram constituency during the last assembly elections.
In the first phase, held across 152 constituencies in 16 districts, voter turnout reached 93.19 percent, according to the Election Commission of India—one of the highest in recent years. Following the initial round, the BJP claimed it would win more than 110 seats, while the Trinamool Congress maintained that its grassroots organizational strength remains intact.
