Leaders and activists of the Youth League, an affiliate of the Awami League, paid tribute to the language martyrs by placing wreaths at a Shaheed Minar in Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira while chanting the slogan “Joy Bangla.”
The incident occurred in the early hours of February 21, marking Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day. The wreath-laying ceremony was held at the central Shaheed Minar in Goyra Bazar under Chandanpur Union, where members of the currently banned Awami League, Youth League, and Chhatra League participated.
The programme was led by Dalim Hossain, president of the union unit of the Youth League and a suspended Union Parishad chairman. Local UP member Abdullah, along with several other activists, also took part in the tribute.
Dalim Hossain later shared images of the event on social media, noting that homage was paid to the language martyrs at the Goyra Bazar Shaheed Minar after a gap of 19 months.
Sources said that Monirul Islam Moni, a former Union Parishad chairman and Awami League leader inerthe same union, has recently been active in organizing similar activities.
The incident has drawn mixed reactions from leaders and activists of the BNP, while sections of the general public have also expressed concern amid the current political context and restrictions on party activities.
