Garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar on Wednesday morning, protesting over three demands, including a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000, an end to the blacklisting of workers and the cancellation of unjustified dismissals.
The blockade began around 9am near Hemayetpur Bus Stand, triggering severe traffic congestion stretching nearly two kilometres along the highway and causing significant suffering for thousands of commuters.
Workers from several garment factories gathered in the area before taking positions on the highway to press their demands.
The protesters said the rising cost of living had made it increasingly difficult to support their families on the current monthly wage of around Tk 12,500. They argued that the existing pay was insufficient to meet basic household expenses and called for the minimum wage to be raised to Tk 30,000.
