Mumbai Police Orders Bollywood Actor Imran Khan to Leave India by October 28

- October 18, 2026, 02:59 AM ET

Mumbai Police has directed Bollywood actor Imran Khan to leave India by October 28 following his participation in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The actor, best known for his role in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and a nephew of actor Aamir Khan, was detained during a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. Aamir Khan’s niece, Zayn Marie, and her associates were also reportedly detained during the protest.

According to Mumbai Police, legal action was initiated against Imran Khan under Sections 29 and 7 of the Immigration Act, as cited in the report, because he is a US passport holder and allegedly participated in a political or anti-government demonstration despite holding an OCI card.

The development followed a letter from former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirit Somaiya to Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner Manoj Kumar Sharma, questioning whether a foreign national had the legal right to participate in such political activities in India. Somaiya also called on social media for the actor to be deported.

Responding to reporters at the protest, Imran Khan said he had no specific political demands and was not representing any organisation or political party. He said he had attended as an ordinary Mumbai resident to understand why people’s freedom of movement was being restricted and their voices suppressed.

While being taken away in a police van, the actor reportedly maintained a light-hearted tone, posting a photograph with the caption, “Going for a little drive.”

The notice has drawn attention in Bollywood and on social media, with observers awaiting whether the actor will challenge the order through legal channels.
