The US military is considering using the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), widely known as the “Mother of All Bombs,” in potential strikes against Iran, CNN reported on Thursday, citing US officials familiar with the matter.
The weapon could be deployed if President Donald Trump orders a new military campaign against the country, according to the report.
The MOAB is the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US military’s arsenal. Its possible use against Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities is reportedly being considered as part of Washington’s military planning.
However, officials familiar with the discussions told CNN that questions remain over how effective the weapon would be in achieving the United States’ strategic objectives.
The potential deployment of the massive bomb could mark a significant escalation in the conflict, depending on the scope and targets of any future US military operation.
