Police recovered the body of a 21-year-old college student stuffed inside a sack from a water-filled ditch in central Bangladesh on Thursday evening, four days after he went missing.
The victim, Chowdhury Fuad Hasan Rohan, was found in a ditch inside a mahogany grove in Raghunathpur village of Rajbari district, about 100 kilometers west of Dhaka.
Rohan had been missing since Monday, Oct. 5, when he left his home around 3 p.m., according to police.
He was a 12th-grade student at Rajbari Government Technical School and College.
Rohan was also the grandson of Md. Rokonuddin Chowdhury, a former chairman of Dadshi Union Parishad, a local government body, and a leader of Bangladesh’s ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Police said local residents discovered the sack containing Rohan’s body in a ditch inside a mahogany grove near his home and alerted authorities.
Officers from Rajbari Sadar Police Station arrived at the scene and recovered the body on Thursday evening.
Rajbari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Uttam Kumar Ghosh confirmed the recovery.
“Acting on information from local residents, we recovered the body from a ditch inside a mahogany grove near Rohan’s home,” Ghosh said.
He said police had begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
“We have already started our investigation. We hope to determine what happened as quickly as possible,” the officer added.
Rajbari Superintendent of Police Mir Monir Hossain and other senior police officials visited the scene following the discovery.
Police have yet to establish how Rohan died or who was responsible for his death.
The discovery of his body inside a sack has raised suspicions of foul play, although investigators have not yet announced a cause of death or identified any suspects.
