Girl Found Dead With Cloth Around Neck in Cumilla, Bangladesh

- October 08, 2026, 11:46 AM ET

Police recovered the body of an unidentified teenage girl, believed to be around 15 years old, with a cloth wrapped around her neck from a field in eastern Bangladesh on Thursday morning.

An abandoned CNG-powered auto-rickshaw was also found beside the body in Jagatpur-Manumura village in Lalmai, an area of Cumilla district, about 100 kilometers southeast of the capital, Dhaka.

Police suspect the girl was strangled before her body was dumped in the field. Her identity and the circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown.

According to police and local residents, the auto-rickshaw had been parked for an unusually long time in a field near the Kachikata-Harishchar Bazar road in Jagatpur Uttarpara.

Residents became suspicious and approached the vehicle. They then discovered the girl’s body lying in the field nearby and immediately informed police.

Officers from Lalmai Police Station arrived at the scene and recovered the body.

A team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) also visited the location to collect evidence and help establish the girl’s identity.

Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman confirmed that a traditional cotton cloth, locally known as a gamcha, was wrapped around the girl’s neck.

He said investigators suspect unidentified attackers strangled the girl before abandoning her body and the auto-rickshaw in the secluded field.

However, police have yet to determine who was responsible or establish a motive for the suspected killing.

Rahman said the CID’s crime scene unit was working to identify the victim and gather evidence.

The body was sent to the Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.

Police said legal proceedings were underway as investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.
