BEIJING — China has strongly opposed US arms sales to Taiwan, reiterating that Beijing’s position on the issue is clear and unchanged.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks on Tuesday while responding to reports that Taiwan had recently received two F-16V fighter jets purchased from the United States and plans to receive another 64 aircraft by the end of the year.
Guo said the United States should implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries. Washington should also exercise caution over the Taiwan issue in accordance with the one-China principle and the three joint communiqués between China and the United States, he said.
“Taiwan is an internal matter of China,” Guo said, stressing that the issue should be resolved by the Chinese people themselves.
He warned that China would not tolerate external interference in the Taiwan issue.
The comments come amid continued tensions between Beijing and Washington over Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory. Taiwan has maintained its own democratically elected government and has sought to strengthen its defence capabilities amid growing military pressure from Beijing.
China has consistently opposed US arms sales to Taiwan, arguing that such deals violate the one-China principle and undermine regional stability.
