China has called for the Palestinian crisis to be brought back onto the path toward a two-state solution as soon as possible, saying governance of Palestine should remain in the hands of Palestinians.
Chinese Vice President Han Zheng made the remarks in an address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to Anadolu Agency.
Han said China opposes unilateral military action that violates the UN Charter and the authority of the Security Council. He also urged countries to resolve international disputes through dialogue and diplomatic efforts rather than military means.
“Palestine’s governance should remain in the hands of Palestinians,” Han said, while calling for more effective governance in the occupied West Bank.
He also urged faster progress on the post-war reconstruction of Gaza and stressed the need to respect the sovereignty and security of Middle Eastern countries, particularly those in the Gulf.
Han said major powers have a “special responsibility” to maintain international peace and security. He called on major countries to comply with international rules, uphold the rule of law and take the lead in addressing global challenges.
China’s remarks come amid continued international diplomatic efforts over the Palestinian crisis and the future governance and reconstruction of Gaza.
