Saima Wazed Putul Set to Join Awami League Presidium Amid Party Restructuring

- September 19, 2026, 04:04 AM ET

Saima Wazed Putul, daughter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is set to join the Awami League Presidium, the party’s highest policymaking body, as part of an organisational restructuring process more than two years after the party was ousted from power.

Senior Awami League leaders said Hasina is taking steps to reorganise the party amid discussions over her possible return to Bangladesh and the future leadership of the organisation.

Putul is reportedly at the centre of the restructuring process, with party leaders saying initiatives have been taken to nominate her to the Presidium. The nomination could be finalised within this month, according to the leaders.

As part of the restructuring process, a meeting of the Awami League’s Central Executive Committee has been called for Friday.

The meeting was initially planned as an in-person gathering in New Delhi. However, party leaders decided on Thursday evening to hold the meeting virtually instead.

Putul is not the only name being considered for the Presidium. According to party leaders, discussions are also underway to include one leader from the Chattogram division and another from the Barishal division.

The proposed changes come as the Awami League seeks to reorganise its leadership and organisational structure following its ouster from power, while the party’s senior leadership continues discussions over its future political course and Hasina’s possible return to Bangladesh.
