DHAKA — A series of cocktail explosions were reported in four areas of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, within several hours on Friday, with one passerby injured in the latest incident, police said.
The explosions were reported in Jatrabari, Malibagh, Mohakhali and Agargaon between the afternoon and around 8 p.m.
At about 7:45 p.m., five cocktails exploded in quick succession at Jatrabari intersection, according to police. One passerby was injured and taken to hospital.
Ahmed Raju, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, said unidentified people had detonated the cocktails and that police were investigating.
“We are trying to establish the identity of the injured person,” he told Bangla Tribune.
Earlier, two cocktails exploded near Amtali intersection in Mohakhali, Banani police said. According to police, the devices were thrown from the Mohakhali flyover. No casualties were reported.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the area and nearby locations to identify those responsible, said AKM Mohin Uddin, an inspector at Banani Police Station.
Another explosion was reported near the Bangladesh Betar building in Agargaon around the same time. Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said police heard an explosion but found no evidence at the scene confirming that a cocktail or bomb had exploded.
Earlier in the afternoon, two cocktails were thrown from the third level of the Malibagh flyover onto the main road near the Malibagh railway crossing, according to Shahjahanpur police.
Mohammad Amirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahjahanpur Police Station, said a police checkpoint was operating on the road when the two devices were thrown. No one was injured.
Police said they were collecting and analysing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators and determine their involvement in the incident. Legal proceedings were also being initiated, the officer said.
The latest incidents came three days after three cocktail explosions were reported in the Dhaka University area on Sept. 15. Two explosions occurred near the Jagannath Hall gate, followed by another near the Teachers-Students Centre, according to police.
A separate explosion was reported near the Supreme Court that afternoon after an unidentified person allegedly threw a cocktail from a moving motorcycle. The incident occurred shortly after a tribunal announced death sentences for seven people, including former Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader and former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat, in a case concerning alleged crimes against humanity during the July 2024 mass uprising.
