A mother in Maharashtra’s Beed district has won a marathon after running barefoot in a saree, saying she will use the ₹3,000 prize money to buy textbooks for her daughters.
Ramabai Ranveer, who works as a cook at an educational institution, took part in the marathon despite financial hardship. She became responsible for raising her two daughters after her husband was killed in an accident in Mumbai.
Despite her difficult circumstances, Ramabai remains determined to provide her daughters with higher education. She has even enrolled one of her daughters at the institution where she works. While Ramabai prepares meals there every day, her daughter studies for her examinations.
According to India Today, a local organisation named Amrit Daud organised the marathon, with ₹3,000 offered as the prize for the winner. After learning about the event, Ramabai decided to participate.
While most of the other participants wore tracksuits and running gear, Ramabai ran in her saree. She initially started the race wearing ordinary slippers, but later took them off and continued running barefoot after finding them uncomfortable.
She had to run over cold roads and stony surfaces while also managing her saree. Despite the difficulties, she eventually overtook the other participants and crossed the finish line first.
After winning the race, Ramabai said she was determined to emerge victorious despite the large number of participants. She said she could see her daughters’ future while running and planned to use the prize money to buy books for them.
Her daughter Pooja also participated in the marathon and finished second. Pooja said she had encouraged her mother to take part in the race, but never imagined that her mother would finish first.
